IKEA Charging Station Hack

I love the IKEA shoe cabinets. I had bought a bunch for our staircase leading down to the basement. It was a small edge that they fit perfectly on and added some easy storage.

Ikea still sells these. At the time I bought them they sold them in packs of three. Now they are sold as a two pack. I had one extra that I held onto. Thinking I would put it to use. The area we were using as a charging area was a mess of wires and looked horrible. I realized that it was perfect for the extra shoe cabinet. Now as most people that have seen these will realize they are good storage for almost anything. On the landing going downstairs I keep gloves, rags, dog towels, cleaning supplies pretty much anything that fits.

This was a simple hack. It just requires gorilla tape, drill a few screws to hang the cabinet with and a few accessories available on Amazon.

First attach the shoe cabine to the wall and hang. Very easy just two screws, I added two more at the bottom for extra support. The storage portion slides out for easy access to the back.

Just slide the storage insert until it will come out of the side rail. With it out, it is two screws attached to the wall on top and two added at botTom. Use anchors for drywall or just to make sure it will hold. Remember it will house expensive phones, Ipads, etc you don’t want it falling off the wall.

I then drilled a hole big enough for the plug of my power unit to fit through. I did this on the side of the unit facing the wall. I also did it down low so it would not interfere with the function of the insert.

Next I drilled an identical hole in the tilt tray insert. Lined up and same size for the plug to fit through. You can and probably should drill these before hanging . I didn’t. Mostly because I wanted to see function and placement. However it would have been much easier to drill before hanging. I threaded the plug through and since I had apple watches to charge I also threaded them through and to the top tray. Reinsert tray.

With tray in. Use the Gorilla tape to mount your attachments. I chose plastic trays to hold pens, notepaper, glasses, and bills. Then My charging extension unit. I only wanted one cord coming out to the electrical. The charger/extension cord has regular plugs and usb with an on off switch on the side. I cleaned everything with alcohol pads the attachments and the unit. Then used the Gorilla tape- it’s double stick. A little hard to get the protective paper off. It takes a few times to get the hang of it. I followEd the directions and covered the entire back of the attachment. Going horizontally with tape not vertically as directions implied a stronger hold.

Still a bit messy on the inside. I will probably get some shorter cords to reduce clutter. However, I now have it contained and out of sight. Charging station and bill area. I know where the glasses and pens are. No longer on my counter. I did leave an IPad cover in there to cushion the IPad from moving too much.

When charging phones I can easily pull the cord to the top and charge it in the tray.

Done!! Nothing fancy but hides the necessary clutter.
