We have a Virginia Creeper vine. Our neighbors are great but very close. In order to create a more private setting we decided to put trellis on the fence. We wanted the backyard to feel like a courtyard.
In order to create this look I used 8ft cedar 2 x 4s and Concrete Remesh sheets.
I put the 2x4 against the fence using outdoor Structural screws. I screwed them into the 2x4 fence supports making sure they were secure but not sticking through to the other side. I would space them out the width of the concrete mesh. So that the end of the mesh hit the metal of the board. Leaving room for another one to butt up against it. Attached with U nails then attach another Cedar board on top of that.
This allowed room for the vine to be weaved through. In no time the creeper spread creating a wall of green.=
Sticking with the corrugated metal look we decided to add stock tanks and window wells. We drilled some drainage holes in ours, however you can by bottomless ones now. Mainly we wanted this look, but it also provided depth and height to the beds to make it more appealing to the eye.
For the window wells I attached them to the cedar 2 x 4s I use to build the trellis. I also use some cedar braces. Behind them to protect the fence I used a flat piece of Galvanized sheet metal.
We have a irrigation system, so that was routed up into them also. Simply fill with dirt and compost and plant. We are in a cooler climate but still choose heat loving plants for inside them. Our thought was if we elevated this plants the dogs wouldn’t get in them. I think we just made it more challenging.
